Few things stir the leap from a kind heart to philanthropism than death. The demise of our Executive Director’s father, Mr. Akinkang Anyaga in 2016 stirred up his desire to support his people – the people of Buluk – residents of the two Builsa Districts of northern Ghana. What started out as his desire to carry out his medical practice in northern Ghana grew into a Charity, the Team of Hope – that delivers life-enhancing surgeries and other medical support services for the people.
The Team of Hope (ToH) is a collective response to the massive health gaps in rural parts of northern Ghana. It is a registered non-profit organisation, founded in 2016 by Dr. Benjamin Akinkang. Growing up in Buluk, he experienced firsthand, the widespread health poverty associated with the deprivation of the inhabitants. This is evident from the massive response, year-on-year to community-calls for health assistance. The existing health burden is exacerbated by widespread poverty, ignorance and partly inequitable development, characterised by almost nonexistent health amenities serving these communities. At the last count (in August 2019), the only hospital serving these communities had one Medical Doctor at any period in time, so most of these surgical cases are not operated on. For those who can afford, they have to travel at least 110 km to undergo paid-for surgeries. Another significant barrier to decent
Healthcare is ignorance – the sheer lack of knowledge and cultural ill- conceptions about the existence of treatments for ailments like hernia, hydroceles, uterine myomas, among others.
Motivated by his father’s repeated words to him when he was in medical school: “Never forget our people when you become a Doctor”, the Team of Hope has carried out medical outreaches in 2016, 2017, 2018 and early part of 2019. Over the period, the Team has brought hope to, and served Buluk and people from neighbouring Districts such as Sisala East, Kassena Nankana, and others totaling over 400 patients.
With the increasing demand for our services and widening coverage, the “The Team of Hope (ToH)” was incorporated under the Companies Act, 1963 (Act 179) on the 14th June 2019 to formally address these critical health challenges. The Team of Hope (ToH), believes that, when you give people quality healthcare services, you give them hope for the future.
Currently, the organisation is based in the two (2) Builsa Districts. Besides these two (2) Districts, we provide services to rural communities in the Kasena- Nankana, Sisala East and Moagduri Districts. Our aim is to scale up to cover all rural communities in Northern Ghana.
